Mini Review: The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec

3***
I realize "meh" is not a sufficient review, but that's sort of what I'm left with after finishing this book. It was fine, but far less magical and engaging than I thought it would be. In my mind, I hoped for a sort of Norse version of Circe or Ariadne, but that is not what I got. While the premise intrigued me, the execution felt slow and repetitive, with few characters I felt attached to. Angrboda was a surprisingly uncharismatic character, and even Loki felt fairly flat, which surprised me. I don't want to be too critical, because I did finish it, and it certainly is not a bad book. But it suffered because I compared it to ones I read recently in the same genre, which just captured my attention so much more than The Witch's Heart did. That being said, I am always drawn to mythological retellings and while this one wasn't a favorite, I wouldn't rule out reading something by this author in the future.
