Mini Review: The Damage by Caitlin Wahrer

3.5 ****
I'm on the fence about The Damage. On the one hand, the premise was very interesting, the multiple POVs well done and the story thoughtful and intelligent; on the other, I felt it dragged a bit and despite the short chapters, moved more slowly than I thought it would, given how it started. I also wished the author had devoted more chapters to develop Nick, the victim of the assault. Surprisingly, I felt his character was given the least amount of chapters from his point of view, but maybe this was intentional on the author's part, and she preferred to show how such an event affects the people around the person who suffered the attack. I guess I just wanted a bit more and also more of his backstory, which was told more by his brother, Tony. I also felt the writing was, at times, a little distanced and repetitive, and to be honest, I have found this to be the case somewhat often by lawyers turned authors, which is the case with Caitlin Wahrer. That all being said, I would read her work again in the future and especially considering that it is a debut, it is well done. The subject of assault and rape is a difficult one, and I think she handles it with care and probably realistically in terms of the way it is handled by the law. As the summary would suggest, there are some disturbing descriptions of rape and violence that some readers will find triggering, so keep that in mind if you decide to pick it up.
