Mini Review: Nutshell by Ian McEwan

4****
Nutshell started off well and really grabbed my attention from the first few pages. I got this in a Little Free Library, dust jacket missing, and decided not even to read the summary online before delving in, and I was certainly in for a surprise! It's a weird book, no doubt, but I felt McEwan really just went for it, which I could appreciate. He's a clever writer, and I doubt many others could have pulled off this story. It was an uncomfortable read pretty much from start to finish, but sprinkled throughout with sharp witted observations, social critiques and insightful introspection about what it means to be human (as told by an unborn fetus...) I'm glad it was a short book, because this kind of story needs to be, and I know, despite it's utter strangeness (or perhaps because of it), this is one that will linger with me for a while longer.
