This book started really strong and then slowed down to the point that I was tempted to abandon it. I'm glad I didn't, though, because while it's slow paced, it is well written and I liked the quiet, thoughtful perspective of Charlie. He has all these big things happening around him and is, in many ways, an observer to it all, trying to navigate his own role in the scheme of things. A thoughtful coming-of-age tale in a small Australian mining town around the time of the Vietnam War, it provided a perspective I hadn't read before and for that in itself, it was worthwhile.
