Book Review: The Maidens by Alex Michaelides

I’m of two minds concerning this book. On the one hand, this was one of my most anticipated books of spring to read and it’s always exciting to get a Celadon Arc, because they’re books I put in the top of my tbr. On the other hand, I found this one to be astonishingly predictable. That’s not to say I wasn’t entertained, but it didn’t have the same pull Alex Michaelides previous book, The Silent Patient, did for me either. The author is good at creating a mounting atmosphere of dread as well as making the setting seem quite real, however, some of his characters veered into the realm of caricatures, especially the women, who mostly appear helpless or malicious, not multi-faceted. That being said, I could see The Maidens and The Silent Patient being turned into successful mini-series. So while I didn't love it, I liked it well enough and it more or less delivered what I was looking for in a weekend read. Sometimes you're not looking for something mind blowing, just and easy, entertaining read you can fly through over the course of a couple of days. I'm certainly still interested in reading what Michaelides comes up with next.
