This Week in Books

This Week in Books is a weekly round-up hosted by Lipsyy Lost and Found. In this post I look back on a book I've finished, highlight one I am currently reading, and one I will read in the near future. What are you reading these days?

THEN: I finished reading Brothers of the Gun: A Memoir of the Syrian War by Marwan Hisham and Molly Crabapple. It told a fascinating, terribly sad story of the Syrian war and the effects it has had on everyday life. It's a chaotic, tragic situation and though I am glad to have read this book and glad that the author's experiences have had an outlet in this way, I finished it feeling frustrated with the sense that nothing will improve for a long time to come.

NOW: I just started Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky. This book seems to have popped up on every to-read list I come across and I was curious how the author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower would do in the mystery genre. It's a door-stopper of a book at 700+ pages, but we'll see how it goes. Quite interesting so far in any case.

NEXT: I think I will finally read A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne next. His previous book The Heart's Invisible Furies is one of my absolute favorite's this year and I wanted to let a little time pass before I gave this one a try. I've heard it's great, though, and Boyne really has a talent for writing engaging characters, which is the part of a story that is the most important to me. Have you read it? What did you think?
