If you read a lot of mysteries like I do, they can sometimes begin to feel a little formulaic. Something I often enjoy, however, and which adds a further element suspense to a story, if an unreliable narrator. I know some readers hate them and find them frustrating, but if it's well done, I think it's a great tool to make the reader question everything. And they're not confined to just crime fiction!
