“Don't gobblefunk around with words.” ― Roald Dahl, The BFG
It's Friday, which means it's time for Link Love, where I share some of my favorite bookish articles and blogs from the past week.
Happy reading!
A good way to start the weekend is Bookriot's article with some wonderful quotes taken from Jane Austen's first novel, Sense and Sensibility.
In The New York Times, author Dave Eggers profiles his fellow writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She is one of my favorite authors (with books like Americanah, Half a Yellow Sun, and the slim but brilliant, We Should All Be Feminists), and I enjoyed this discussion, where the authors speak on such a wide variety of subjects.
I always like to learn what famous authors think of other famous books, and this article from the Literary Hub reveals which classic fiction was hated by some of the best known writers. I must say, though, I feel rather protective of Pride and Prejudice, which it seems was not held in very high regard by a number of these authors!
You have probably heard of The Power by Naomi Alderman which is being celebrated everywhere at the moment. It poses the question how a world would be if women were in power and feared, instead of men. Though I am intrigued by this, I have to think, why fear? Women should not have to adapt to be feared in order to gain power ("The power to hurt is a kind of wealth.”). Why not rather write a world in which the strengths of women (and I generalize, I know) such as sensibility and measured action (and multi-tasking) bring them to positions of power? If feminism means women becoming tyrannical, it has gone down the wrong road. Have you read this books? If so, what did you think? Whatever my opinion on the idea behind the book, I found this article discussing it very interesting.
For a little lighter reading, Bookriot has rounded up a few books about bookstrores. There are some really good ones on this list and some entirely new to me, like Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore.
